Women's Issues in 2012 - A New Series

We are set to release a new series of issues affecting women of all ages, races, creeds, and socio-economic groups. The main stream media, social media, and the beauty salon networks are discussing this weeks current events relating to gay marriage. President Barack Obama openly expressed his acceptance of gay marriage and the talk began. As researchers, we tend not to get emotionally attached to any new issue. We attempt to approach political issues with the scientific precision, of which we have been trained. Many of us agree with some of the choices our president has made. Realistically, it is difficult to agree with anyone on every issue. Spouses disagree and we often second-guess our own choices. President Obama made a monumental stance in implementing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. A key issue with women has been the glass ceiling, disparities in payroll with men of equal or lesser achievement, and gender discrimination. We hope that you enjoy the new series, as we deliver the facts without editorial comments. Be positive, progressive, and self-propelling as your strive for excellence. Professor Danna Ntaka

Take Control of Your Mindset

In times like these, it is imperative that a business person maintain a positive mindset. Business owners, heads of households, and even children have the economy on their minds! Ruminating over the issues will not facilitate resolution. Strategic planning and appropriate actions are keys to the success of any group or individual. The techniques discussed in this article will work for a business in the seed and soil stage, the fruit and flowering stage, or veteran harvest stage.

Adopting the doom and gloom attitude conveyed by some media organizations will not move your business forward. The media has a job to perform, and they are magnificently effctive in instilling fear into the minds of all faithful participants. Many people watch the news with religious fervence. Watching the news is acceptable, but adopting immobilizing fear is detrimental to any program for success or reconstruction. Watch the news with caution. Dilute the effects of any negative reports with 10 times as many uplifting reports. Instead of reading every article within reach about a failed business, seek information about creative new start-up enterprises that are reporting success.

You may be asking why there I am placing such an emphasis on optimism. Brainwashing techniques are effective! Pep rallies are an important process in a high school football program. Before competing against a rival, the team, cheerleaders, administrative staff, and the student body assemble in the gymnasium for a rally. It is impossible to leave a pep rally saddened or weighed down emotionally! The band plays upbeat songs, while the cheerleaders jump and waive pom-poms! Everyone in the building participates in the euphoric process of encouraging the team. In life and in business, we need cheerleaders. Become the captain of your own cheerleading squad. Your rivals have the job of neutralizing your team spirit. Do not borrow their job description.

Motivational speakers, ministers, and smart parents use words to uplift. Provide yourself with a daily dose of encouragement and watch the effects on your productivity. The only way through a difficult time is to work through it. You can choose to work through it with non-productive anger or regret, or work through the issues with an unstoppable mindset.

I enjoy hearing accounts about people with fighting spirits. I read biographies everyday about people who overcame despite the odds. A friend of my family recently faught a brave dual with cancer. This lady continued to attend church service every Sunday eventhough in severe pain. She insisted on finishing her education after receiving the diagnosis. She leaves a legacy of strength for her friends and family. The courage and discipline displayed by this lady can be a lesson to others who have no terminal diagnosis. Having a terminal diagnosis can profoundly prompt one to start living and cease complaining.

Start on the journey of becoming organized. Organization is a systematic way of completing tasks. There is no right or wrong system, with the exception of no system at all. Becoming organized is a journey that will not happen overnight. Once you have to decided to become organized a new mindset is already in place. Organizational techniques will be discussed in greater detail in future articles. Start to clean and destroy clutter one drawer at a time. Donating unused goods will have a cathartic effect on your mind.

Use yellow post-it notes to remind yourself of your achievements, talents, and obstacles you have already overcome. Go to the public library and check out CD’s that foster a positive mindset. Use the commute to and from work or school to plant and fertilize effective thoughts. Associate with people who are positive! Take control of your mind before some other entity infiltrates your thought process. Metaphorically speaking, if your mental cup is empty, someone will fill it with the liquid of their choice.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Healthcare Policies?

Republicans and Democrats are emphatic about their views on President Obama's efforts to repair America's broken healthcare system. The lines are drawn straight down the middle. Democrats are for the passage of the new healthcare bill and Republicans are vehemently against it. While many Americans are scurrying around to get last minute items from the grocer for the traditional yuletide feast, lawmakers are voting in the middle of the night. Minority Leader John Boehner, a Republican from Ohio, was quoted by the Associated Press in Washington, "Not even Ebenezer Scrooge himself could devise a scheme as cruel and greedy as Democrats' government takeover of healthcare."

Democraric Majority Leader Harry Reid, from Nevada, was also quoted by the Associated Press in Washington, D.C. Referring to the bill, "...this brings us one step closer to making [the late] Ted Kennedy's dream a reality." This is the Senate's first Christmas Eve vote since 1895.

The Obama Administration believes that the healthcare plan will:
*Reduce long-term growth of healthcare costs for businesses and families
*Protect families from debt or bankruptcy because of healthcare costs
*Guarantee choice of doctors and healthcare plans
*Invest in prevention and wellness
*Improve patient safety and quality of care
According to the Democrats, the plan contains a few other benefits that will revamp the system over time. The healthcare system is in need of dramatic reform, and every president since Harry Truman has felt the need to make changes. However, the changes must be well planned and methodical. It will be impossible to please everyone, so we must proceed cautiously.

Consider this:
It is believed that American families spend more on healthcare than families in other industrialized nations. However, America ranked last on an international study on healthcare efficiency. (See our article from December 22, 2009 for the statistics.) It would appear that the funds utilized in the healthcare system should be appropriately managed. How is it possible to spend the most money and rank last among other industrialized nations?

The goal at Women's Issues Worldwide is not to persuade you to think one way or another, but to provide you with thought provoking statistics and allow you to process the information anyway you choose. Democrats are extremely happy that they are closer to reform that will make COBRA more affordable during time spent between jobs. According to the Democrats' plan, this bill will extend coverage to 30 million of the 47 million uninsured Americans. Many of the uninsured are women and children.

Republican Senator Lamar Alexander feels that this amendment was cooked up in secret and introduced in the middle of a snow storm. The Republican Senator from Tennesee was quoted by the New York Times by saying, "...[the Democrats] scheduled Senate to come in at midnight...scheduled a vote for 1:00 a.m., is insisting that it be passed before Christmas-because they don't want the American people to know what's in it." Jubilant Democrats and disgruntled Republicans showed their emotions openly.

In preparation for writing this article, I have searched the databases looking for clauses the healthcare bill contains to close the gap between the quality of healthcare for women and men. Disabled women receive a lower quality of care than non-disabled women, and women's care is not comparable to that of men.

On a lighter note, I am sure that many American men are catching all the sporting events they desire during this festive holiday, while the girls are burning the midnight oil making sweet potato pies and Christmas cookies. In fairness to the male chefs in our families, it is great to know that all men are not skating past the holiday chores! Many talented men are basting turkeys while tuning in to a football game. Also, a fair share of the girls enjoy watching ESPN. Happy holidays!

Welcome to the Premier Forum for Women's Issues

Welcome to Women's Issues Worldwide, the online discussion forum for issues facing women of the world. Feel free to discuss any issues relating to health and welfare, business, employment opportunities, and education. This forum is designed to allow everyone's voice to be heard. Women have made many strides in the world thanks to historic figures like Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, and Florence Nightingale. However, our work is not done. Domestic violence, stress, and gender disparities in healthcare remain a part of the feminine experience in this century. It is naive to think that gender disparities only exist in developing countries. American women have the opportunity to explore careers that may not be available to women in Bolivia or Peru, but the feminine experience can be improved in developed and developing nations.

Consider these statistics:
According to an article published in Broadsheet-Salon.com on January 10, 2008, the United States ranks last in preventable deaths of 19 industrialized nations. If America had performed as well as France, 101,000 fewer people would have died, during the time period studied. According to this study performed by Journal Health Affairs, the majority of these preventable deaths were women.

America possesses state of the art healthcare, but is plagued with issues of access to healthcare. Approximately 47 million people in the United States are uninsured.

Contact us with any topic you feel needs further exploration and advocacy. Thank you for visiting this site. On behalf of the writers and advocates at Women's Issues Worldwide, we eagerly await your input.
